Departments and divisions

Department and division information is useful for three reasons:

  1. Org structure clarity. The ability for new hires to quickly learn how the org functions and who does what.

  2. Financial reporting. The ability to easily look at operating costs by department and division.

  3. User groups. The ability to tag groups instead of individuals in all our systems.


Viewing responsibilities in the organization

To help navigate responsibilities and hierarchy, we use BambooHR to give clarity on hierarchy, position in the company map, and functional responsibilities.

Since we are a small company, we expect people to grow beyond the definitions of their job descriptions. This causes responsibilities to break hierarchy, which is OK!

Department Map

The company map - located on the home page of Confluence - shows how we function at a high level as a company:

  1. Build products (Right)

  2. Sell those products (Left)

Finally, the Operations department is the infrastructure needed to build and sell our products.
